6:00pm wine and cheese reception; 6:30pm program starts
Please join us, and our partners Wayne Art Center, for a presentation of Living Well: The Cassatts and Their Main Line Houses, an illustrated talk by Jeff Groff, the Estate Historian at the Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library.
This program looks at the Cassatt family and their notable mansions and country estates along the Main Line; one of the most famous, and wealthiest, suburban neighborhoods in America.
In many ways the Cassatt’s epitomize Philadelphia and the Main Line in its heyday as a center for business, society, and sports. Key figures include Pennsylvania Railroad President Alexander J. Cassatt and his wife Lois who lived at Cheswold in Haverford and had a gentleman’s farm in Berwyn called Chesterbrook; his brother and financier J. Gardner Cassatt and his wife Eugenia who built Kelso in Berwyn; and A. J.’s son Robert Cassatt and his wife Minnie whose country house was Beaupre in Rosemont. All were designed by notable architects. Other family members, including the artist Mary Cassatt, will be highlighted.
