Over the course of their 12 years in practice, Sebastian Treese Architects have found their passion in creating “urban faces” – buildings within the fabric of a city that (re-)define the threshold between public and private space. In their lecture, Julia and Sebastian Treese will discuss how urban livable architecture can be created by a differentiated examination and adaption of the spatial and visual habits of a place. By presenting selected urban infill projects, the two partners will explain their approach to an architecture that contributes to the life and identity of the street and neighborhood in front of it without undermining the comfort and safety of the life behind its walls.

Sebastian Treese Architekten was established by Sebastian Treese in 2011. His wife, Julia Treese, joined the practice in 2012, Jan Burggraf joined as a partner in 2013. Together, they work to reclaim an eloquent and coherent architectural language for residential buildings. Eisenzahnstraße 1, completed in Berlin in 2016, marked the beginning of a fruitful and still ongoing partnership with the real estate developer Ralf Schmitz. The collaboration with Robert A. M. Stern Architects between 2016 and 2020 for two residential projects in Berlin has been a formative encounter with a highly respected role model. While the office focuses its work in Berlin, Hamburg, Düsseldorf and Munich, their first international projects in India, France, Switzerland and Canada have presented the office with wholly new challenges and possibilities.

In 2021, Sebastian Treese Architects received the Richard H. Driehaus Prize in recognition of their work. Between 2022 and 2023, Julia and Sebastian Treese taught as Visiting Professor of the Practice at the Notre Dame School of Architecture and co-established a German lecture series with distinguished guests, including Prof. Hans Kollhoff, Prof. Christoph Mäckler and more. Julia Treese was appointed member of the Richard Driehaus Jury in August 2023.
